Job Summary
FlexTrades VTL Machinists are responsible for setting up and operating Pietro Carnaghi VTL AC46 TM(Y) 4000 machines with Fanuc 31i controls and 6-axis live tooling, including interchangeable angle milling heads. This role requires high-level machining experience, blueprint interpretation skills, and knowledge of G-code and M-code programming.
Job Responsibilities
- Set up and operate vertical turning lathes (VTLs) to blueprint specifications
- Work with Fanuc 31i CNC controls on complex parts involving milling, drilling, and thread milling
- Use and understand GD&T callouts such as true position, parallelism, diameter, and depth
- Perform setups in collaboration with supervisors and programmers for quality assurance
- Read, interpret, and review G-code/M-code programming for accuracy and troubleshoot as needed
- Inspect work using inspection sheets, bubbled blueprints, and calipers to confirm tolerances
- Communicate nonconforming parts and quality issues directly to supervisors
- Handle complex metals including Inconel, stainless 304/316, carbon steel, and aluminum
- Operate forklifts and pallet jacks for material transfer (rigging experience a plus)
- Apply basic math to determine offsets and dimensions (no trigonometry required)
- Remain highly detail-oriented and cautious when working with heavy-duty equipment
- Assist maintenance techs as needed and receive on-the-job training from senior machinists
Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of experience operating large VTL equipment
- Proficient with G-code/M-code and capable of reading and troubleshooting CNC programs
- Ability to interpret complex blueprints in both metric and standard formats
- Must have experience machining carbon steel and aluminum (Inconel and stainless a plus)
- Strong understanding of GD&T and ability to hold tolerances from ±.001? to ±.050?
- Familiarity with inspection tools and procedures required
- Forklift and rigging experience preferred but not required
- Ability to work independently and follow safety protocols
- Willingness to travel and commit to 3–12 month assignments
- Ability to work second and third shifts, including 50+ hours per week
- Must pass a drug screen

- Interpret and follow detailed weld prints, blueprints, and standard operating procedures
- Execute a wide variety of weld joints including lap, tee, beveled, and flared groove welds
- Weld in flat, horizontal, vertical, and some overhead positions
- Work on fixtured parts to ensure consistent, repeatable welds
- Weld on aluminum, carbon steel, and stainless steel plate and tubing
- Work with materials up to ½” thick for plate and up to 3/8” wall thickness for tube (round and square pipe up to 4” diameter)
- Perform tube-to-tube and tube-to-plate welding
- Produce high-quality, cosmetically sound welds (single to three-pass welds)
- Conduct grinding for rework or cosmetic refinements as needed
- Operate overhead cranes, forklifts, and other material handling equipment
- Maintain a safe work environment and follow all safety protocols
- Pass a PFT/RFT test onsite for PAPR use (powered air-purifying respirator)
