FlexTrades is seeking skilled Welder Fitters for project-based assignments across the country. If you have strong blueprint reading, fitting, and tack welding skills in a structural steel environment, this is your opportunity to earn top pay, guaranteed overtime, and full benefits while working on impactful industrial projects.
Job Requirements
- Fitting is A LOT of measuring, laying out, fitting, and tacking! There is no full seam welding, it’s just tack welding and then full seam welds are done by welders in the facility.
- This role is required to fit and tack the structural steel and materials that then get put into the welding area for full seam welding.
- Fitting skills are CRITICAL.
- Tack welding is done with MIG welding, .045” electrodes as well as Flux Core wire. Spray transfer.
- Structural materials: shear plates (3/8” to ½” thick), clip angles, channels, depth plates, end plates, girders, beams, columns, gussets, doublers, etc.
- Fitters are tacking piece parts onto large structural items such as girders, beams, columns gussets, doublers, etc. These piece parts include structural tube, shear plates (3/8” to ½”), clip angles, depth plates, and end plates.
- Fitters may also weld on tube steel (rectangular and square) to plates and caps (no tube to tube).
- All pieces Fitters are tacking onto the large structural items are attached for bolt connections which are needed down the line and during assembly/installation in the field.
- All materials are ready for fitting ops and are either provided by suppliers or processed in the facility on brakes, drills, plasma cutters, shears, saws, and/or camber machines.
- Welders are welding all of the tacked items from Fitters and also full structural materials.
- The thickness of materials range from 3/16” to 3”, depending upon where someone is working. Most items Fitters are working with are go to a max of 1” in thickness.
- Most items are mild steel.
- In tacking and fitting, this is just tack welds so mostly single passes.
- Reference materials: blueprints/drawings and WPSs.
- All measurements are in inch/standard/imperial, not metric.
- MUST be solid in reading and working from blueprints only.
- MUST be solid in measurements and layout to ensure all items are tacked and fitted to spec.
- Weld joints can vary depending upon what is being welded so any and all types of weld joints under the fillet and groove weld categories could occur.
- Fitters are working in the flat position.
- Quality: must do high-quality work.
- Operating overhead cranes for both material movement and grabbing materials at the beginning of the shift. All cranes are 5T overhead cranes.
- Tools: must bring a chipping hammer.
