Manual Grinder
FlexTrades is hiring experienced Manual Grinders for nationwide project-based manufacturing assignments supporting precision grinding and machining operations.
This role is designed for machinists who can independently set up and operate manual OD cylindrical grinders, hold tight tolerances and verify critical dimensions and surface finish requirements throughout the grinding process.
Position Overview
The Manual Grinder will perform finish grinding on piston rods and other precision components using manual OD cylindrical grinding equipment.
This position requires strong blueprint-reading skills, hands-on experience with precision measuring tools and the ability to verify diameter, runout, taper and surface finish requirements while maintaining strict quality standards.
Responsibilities
- Set up and operate manual OD cylindrical grinding equipment
- Perform finish grinding on piston rods
- Grind parts to specified size and surface finish requirements
- Adjust machine settings including in-feed, traverse and belt speed as needed
- Measure parts throughout the grinding cycle
- Use precision measuring tools to verify dimensional requirements
- Verify diameter, runout, taper and surface finish
- Read and interpret blueprints and engineering drawings
- Interpret GD&T callouts
- Perform self-inspections throughout the machining process
- Complete required quality checks
- Report quality concerns
- Document nonconforming material
- Load and unload parts using cranes and manual handling methods as required
- Support other shop and manufacturing activities as needed
Qualifications
- Experience setting up and operating manual OD cylindrical grinders
- Strong blueprint-reading skills
- Working knowledge of GD&T
- Experience using micrometers and precision measuring equipment
- Ability to hold tight dimensional tolerances
- Experience verifying runout
- Experience verifying taper
- Experience evaluating surface finish requirements
- Strong attention to detail and quality
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Preferred Qualifications
- Manual engine lathe experience
- Experience grinding coated materials
