Welder Fitter

FlexTrades is hiring Welder Fitters for project-based assignments supporting structural steel fabrication. This role is built for experienced fitters who can measure, lay out, fit and tack structural components with accuracy, consistency and confidence.

Position Overview

Welder Fitters will perform structural steel fitting work, including measuring, layout, fitting, tacking and quality checks. This role requires experience fitting piece parts onto large structural members, working with mild steel up to 1” thick and using MIG tack welding to prepare components for final welding and assembly.

Responsibilities

• Perform structural steel fitting, including measuring, layout, fitting and tacking
• Tack weld components using MIG welding, including .045” solid and flux core wire with spray transfer
• Fit and tack parts such as shear plates, clip angles, end plates, gussets, doublers, channels and structural tube to plates and caps
• Fit piece parts onto large structural members, including beams, girders and columns
• Read and work directly from blueprints, drawings and WPSs
• Ensure all components are fitted accurately for bolt connections
• Operate 5-ton overhead cranes to move and stage materials
• Perform quality checks and make corrections as needed, including cleanup and light back gouging
• Maintain a clean, safe and organized work area

Qualifications

• Strong structural steel fitting experience required
• Proficient in reading and interpreting blueprints
• Solid measurement, layout and math skills using imperial and inch-based measurements
• Experience with MIG tack welding using .045” wire
• Flux core and solid wire experience preferred
• Familiarity with structural steel materials up to 1” thick, primarily mild steel
• Ability to work in the flat position
• Comfortable using overhead cranes
• High attention to detail
• Strong commitment to quality
• Must supply a chipping hammer
• Welding experience beyond tacking is a plus
• No weld test required for fitters
