Manual Machinist
FlexTrades is hiring experienced Manual Machinists for nationwide project-based assignments supporting industrial component repair, remanufacturing, and precision machining operations.
This role is designed for machinists who can independently set up and operate large manual engine lathes, repair complex industrial components, and maintain tight dimensional tolerances.
Candidates should have hands-on experience machining shafts, rotors, housings, bearings, sleeves, commutators, and related components. The ability to work without prints or drawings, interpret verbal instructions, and perform accurate dimensional inspections is essential.
Position Overview
The Manual Machinist will perform precision machining and repair work on large industrial components using manual engine lathes and related equipment.
This position requires strong machining fundamentals, experience with repair and remanufacturing operations, and the ability to determine appropriate machining methods when detailed prints or drawings are unavailable.
Responsibilities include component setup, machining, dimensional inspection, fit verification, measurement documentation, and material handling.
Key Responsibilities
- Set up and operate large manual engine lathes for industrial repair and remanufacturing work
- Machine and repair shafts, rotors, housings, bearings, sleeves, commutators, and related components
- Perform machining operations without prints or drawings when required
- Conduct precision measurements using micrometers, bore gauges, calipers, and other inspection tools
- Complete fit checks and dimensional inspections throughout the machining process
- Interpret verbal instructions and collaborate with team members to determine appropriate repair methods
- Document measurements and inspection results for traceability
- Machine steel, copper, and composite materials to specified tolerances
- Perform commutator machining and undercutting operations as needed
- Operate overhead cranes to load, unload, and position large industrial components
Required Qualifications
- Experience setting up and operating large manual engine lathes
- Experience machining large industrial components
- Ability to machine parts without prints or drawings when required
- Strong precision measurement and inspection skills
- Experience using micrometers, bore gauges, calipers, and related inspection tools
- Ability to hold dimensional tolerances as tight as .001 inch
- Experience performing industrial repair or remanufacturing machining work
- Ability to work with large, heavy components
- Ability to accurately document measurements and inspection results
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience operating Bridgeport milling machines
