Manual Lathe Machinist
FlexTrades is hiring experienced Manual Lathe Machinists for nationwide project-based manufacturing assignments supporting precision aerospace machining, repair and overhaul operations.
This role is designed for machinists who can independently set up and operate manual engine lathes, perform ID and OD turning, solve fixturing challenges and hold tight tolerances on complex components.
Position Overview
The Manual Lathe Machinist is responsible for setting up and operating 2-axis manual engine lathes to repair and overhaul aerospace engine components.
This position requires strong blueprint reading skills, working knowledge of GD&T and the ability to inspect machined parts using precision measuring tools while maintaining tolerances up to .001 inch.
Responsibilities
- Set up and operate 2-axis manual engine lathes
- Perform ID and OD turning operations on aerospace engine components
- Repair and overhaul components to required dimensions and tolerances
- Read and follow routers, data cards, drawings and work instructions
- Independently determine part setup, fixturing and machine alignment
- Inspect parts using micrometers, calipers, vernier calipers and other measuring tools
- Verify dimensions and tolerances according to prints and specifications
- Deburr components using air-driven disc grinders
- Perform basic operator-level machine maintenance
- Safely use overhead cranes and carts to move fixtures and parts
Qualifications
- Experience setting up and operating manual engine lathes
- Experience performing ID and OD turning operations
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings
- Working knowledge of GD&T
- Understanding of true position, runout and flatness
- Experience inspecting machined parts to print requirements
- Ability to use micrometers, calipers and other precision measuring tools
- Experience holding tolerances up to .001 inch
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to solve setup and fixturing challenges
- Experience machining stainless steel, super alloys or similar materials preferred
- CMM operation experience or ability to read CMM reports preferred
