
Electrical Assembler
FlexTrades is hiring experienced Electrical Assemblers for travel-based assignments supporting locomotive rebuild operations across the United States. This is an excellent opportunity to work with complex electrical systems while contributing to the restoration of high-performance locomotives.
Key Responsibilities
- Remove old wires, cables, and wire harnesses from locomotives.
- Inspect and assess wires for repair or replacement.
- Disconnect and document wire routing using visual routers and schematics.
- Rebuild wire harnesses based on tear-apart documentation.
- Install new or refurbished components using single wires, cables, and harnesses.
- Follow detailed computer-based instructions and schematics.
- Route and connect wires to components such as generators, engines, brake racks, HVAC units, and more.
- Assist in mechanical fit-up and placement of internal components.
- Participate in final assembly across six rebuild stages.
Qualifications
- Basic computer skills required.
- Ability to read tape measures to sixteenths.
- Must follow instructions precisely—no improvisation allowed.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Ability to work in tight spaces and various physical positions (e.g., laying down, overhead work).
- Comfortable working at heights (10–18 feet).
- Must complete a 4-hour intensive training course; additional 2–3 hours if assigned to wire harness building.
Physical Requirements
- Dexterity and strength to strip, crimp, cut, and connect wires and cables.
- Ability to lift and maneuver large wire harnesses (up to 1000 lbs with assistance).
- Work involves thick and thin wires, large cables, and complex harnesses.
- Use of mechanical and electrical tools including cutters, crimpers, pneumatic tools, and general hand tools.
Preferred Skills
- Experience in electrical assembly or similar field.
- Familiarity with wire sizes (0 AWG to 28 AWG) and cable diameters up to 1.25”.
- Understanding of wire running lists (WRLs), schematics, and visual routers.
- Ability to assist in fabrication and mechanical tasks.
