CNC Machinist – Cutter Grinder (Nationwide Travel)

Job Summary
As a CNC Machinist with FlexTrades, you’ll operate a state-of-the-art Anca MX7 Linear Cutter Grinder to grind and regrind high-precision cutting tools. You’ll work with proven conversational programs, diamond grinding wheels, and robotic automation. This role requires experience with multi-axis machining and an understanding of quality standards down to ±.0002”.
Key Responsibilities
- Set up and operate a 5-axis Anca MX7 Cutter Grinder with RN35 conversational controls
- Grind and sharpen carbide end mills and drills (ranging from 1/8” to 1” diameter and up to 6” length)
- Work from grind/regrind specifications and setup instructions (standard and metric prints)
- Select appropriate diamond hybrid bond grinding wheels (4–6” diameter) for tool geometry
- Dress and true grinding wheels using external and integrated systems
- Load/unload tools using a robotic arm; re-home the robot as needed during faults
- Pull programs from internal libraries, make offsets, and modify code to match wheel variations
- Prove out newly written or modified programs with input from engineering
- Perform average setups in approximately 3 hours, including full tool validation
- Use a chop saw to cut tools to length when required
Quality and Inspection
- Ensure tools meet tight tolerances of ±.0002” and surface finishes of 16µin
- Conduct in-process and post-inspections using hand tools and Zoller Genius measuring equipment
- Support First Piece Inspections (FPIs) and First Article Inspections (FAIs) as required
- Follow control documents and tool-specific specs throughout production
Candidate Requirements
- Proven experience operating a multi-axis CNC grinding machine (Anca MX7 experience preferred)
- Strong understanding of conversational CNC programming and offsets
- Capable of selecting and dressing grinding wheels
- Experience with both new tool grinding and rework grinding operations
- Familiar with robot-assisted automation and recovery
- Understanding of GD&T basics, including length and diameter callouts
- Familiar with horizontal or vertical milling operations (4-axis minimum)
- Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision
- Must pass a drug test and be open to travel
- Willing to commit to long-term assignments (3–12 months) with 50+ hours/week
