Sr. Design Engineer

FlexTrades is hiring experienced Sr. Design Engineers for project-based assignments across the United States. This role is ideal for engineers with a strong background in CNC machining, machine shop operations, and CAD/CAM design who want to support advanced manufacturing initiatives while collaborating directly with customers.

Position Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Design Engineer to evaluate the manufacturability of customer-submitted parts, components, and assemblies. This role is critical in translating customer needs into detailed, production-ready designs and documentation, ensuring alignment with our manufacturing capabilities and standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Analyze customer-submitted parts and assemblies to determine manufacturability
• Break down complex assemblies into individual components, tooling, and materials
• Create detailed 3D CAD models and 2D drawings using CREO
• Specify required tools and materials for manufacturing; collaborate with Manufacturing Engineers to integrate this into BOMs, SOPs, SOWs, work instructions, and routers
• Apply CNC machining expertise and experience in machine shop environments to ensure design feasibility
• Communicate directly with customers to clarify incomplete or inconsistent design data
• Modify customer-provided files (e.g., STEP files, 3D models) to align with internal processes and capabilities
• Work on the production floor as needed to understand operations, machinery capabilities, and worker needs
• Support quoting efforts by reviewing customer requests submitted via portals, email, or phone

Required Qualifications

• Proficiency in CREO for 3D modeling and 2D drafting
• Strong understanding of CNC machining and machine shop operations
• Ability to interpret and modify customer-provided CAD files and documentation
• Excellent communication skills for customer interaction and cross-functional collaboration
• Basic knowledge of manufacturing documentation and process flow

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Ansys CAD
• Background in vacuum brazing or dip brazing, with an understanding of how these processes affect tolerances and machining operations
• Experience working with aluminum billet and other common aerospace materials
