
Mechanical Design Engineer
FlexTrades is hiring experienced Mechanical Design Engineers for nationwide project-based assignments supporting advanced manufacturing operations. This role is ideal for design professionals who thrive in fast-paced production environments and excel at developing assembly and test fixtures that drive precision, safety, and efficiency.
What You’ll Be Doing (Scope of Work)
- Design jigs and fixturing for assembly and test operations
- Design or modify tooling to accommodate new product requirements
- Create tooling for manual assembly processes, including picking, pressing, crimping, guarding, torquing, and testing
- Develop error-proofing (poka-yoke) designs across various value streams
- Design complex test stands for torque verification and new equipment/process introduction
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including operations, quality, test engineers, NPI (New Product Introduction), and safety
- Support prototyping and pilot builds, often requiring rapid iteration, including using 3D printing
- Ensure designs comply with all safety, quality, and performance standards
What You’ll Need to Succeed
- Design for Assembly & Test Fixtures (Absolute Priority): Experience in mid to high-volume production environments. Fixtures may produce from single-digit parts per day to 200 parts per day
- Windchill Proficiency (Absolute Priority): Must understand version control, check-in/check-out procedures, workflow approvals, and CAD integration. Experience managing product data, including models, drawings, BOMs, and change management
- CREO Experience: Minimum 5 years using CREO as the primary modeling software
- GD&T Expertise: Deep understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing, including performing stack-ups
- Production Environment Experience: Prior experience designing for assembly/testing within a mid to high-volume production environment
- Hands-on Manufacturing/Assembly Floor Exposure: Must have real-world experience working directly with manufacturing and assembly processes
- Education: Associate’s degree preferred, but relevant hands-on experience and CAD certification are acceptable
